[Video] Kanye West Performs "Bound 2" on Jimmy Kimmel Live with Charlie Wilson and The Roots

Favorite song off Yeezus.  Reminds me of his earlier work from The College Dropout, Late Registration, and his song "The Food" with Common.

Changes to the MTV's VMA for 2013-New Catergory, New Location, New Moonman

New Category:

A highly sought after category for many up and coming artists is the "Best New Artist" category.  However, this year, that category has been renamed to the "Artists To Watch" category.  I like the new title more because it give recongniation to each artist who is nominated.  It also takes away the dreaded "Best New Artist" curse that a lot of artists fear, including this being the highest point in their career.

New Location:
The VMAs are usually held in either Radio City Music Hall or the Staples Center.  MTV use to switch coast each years but couple of years it has been in LA.  Sometimes, the VMAs are in different locations like Miami in 2005 or Vegas in 2007.  This year, the VMAs will be on the East Coast in New York, but not in the typical location, Radio City Music Hall.  This year it will be in Brooklyn at the new Barclay's Center that Jay-Z christened with an 8 show run last year.  Having been to the Barclay's Center before, I think it will have a cool vibe because of the location.  It seems like the VMAs are already influnced by Brooklyn, with the tagline "No Sleep Till 8/25" and the special edition Moonman.

New Moonman:
Artist KAWS has reinterpreted the Moonman for this year's show, the first time that it has happen in its 30 year history.  KAWS is known for his X out eyes are putting a new spin on iconic figures, such as Mickey Mouse.  Below is a video of him discussing his Moonman and some images of his previous work.

[Music Video] Jay-Z & Kanye West-Otis

This video looks like the took the allocated budget for the video and just had fun doing something you always wanted to do.  (Kinda like the Blink 182 "The Rock Show" video below) This video was an excuse to have a crazy car with models in it.  The Aziz Ansari cameo is great too.
I know, the Jay-Z & Kanye/Blink 182 comparison is very random.

[Mixtape] Jhene Aiko-sailing soul(s)

You may remember Jhene Aiko as the girl that sang the hook to the drake leak song "July" from last summer or the "cousin" of Lil Fizz from B2K (they aren't actually cousins. She admitted it was just a media ploy). But now she is making moves to stand on her own with the release of her mixtape sailing soul(s). The singer, song writer, and mother (she has a daughter with Omarion's brother O'Ryan) wrote all the songs on the mixtape excluding "July". The mixtape doesn't really have a theme. Its reads more like a diary. "sailing soul(s)" is filled with songs about the thoughts you have when you let your mind wander. My favorite songs are "hoe," "you vs. them," and "growing apart too". This mixtape also features artists Miguel, Kanye West, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Roosevelt, and HOPE. She also samples verses from 50 Cent (Wanksta) and Gucci Mane (Pretty Girls).

[Music Video] Katy Perry feat Kanye West "E.T."

This song has grown on me since it has become a single.  The visuals are amazing for this video. "Peacock" is my favorite song on Teenage Dream and was going to be the next single following "Firework." However, by adding Kanye West this is an unstoppable single that's already #1, her 4th consecutive single for this album.

[Music Video] Kanye West-All of the Lights

This is one of my favorite songs off of "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy."  Not just because of the beat, but lyrical the song really stands out and reminds me of the old "College Dropout" Kanye.  He really paints the story of the relationship the guy has with his girlfriend and daughter and its pretty powerful.  Sometimes I wonder what's goes on his that little mind of his since as far as I know his personally hasn't had this experience.  This song was talked about a lot before the album came out because of all its features, but only Rihanna and Kid Cudi are in the video with Kanye.  Also, Fergie's solo is cut out.  It would have probably been hard to have all those people be free at the same time to be in the video, but they are mentioned at the end of the video.  Please check out the epilepsy warning before viewing this video.

Kanye West talks about why he dropped the "Good Ass Job" title

I understand why he changed the album title, the songs he was putting out didnt match the "Good Ass Job" title at all.  But I miss the skitsand the sound of the college themed albums. But that's Kanye for you, as he said in the interview, he will do what he wants, not what you want him to do.  And I can respect that.  But I hope he does make the "Good Ass Job" album eventually.
Also, I think its funny that the interviewer is trying so hard not to laugh in this interview. He doesn't even know how to respond to Kanye.

"Deuces" Remix ft Chris Brown, Drake, T.I. , Kanye West, Fabolous, Andre 3000

When I first heard about this song, I didn't think it was possible to have all those features.  Those are pretty big names, and Drake has been begging to work with Andre for quite some time.  However, it materialized to a remix that left me speechless (in a good way).  I thought Drake's reference to Usher's "Nice In Slow" is his verse was clever.  I like how Drake's raps are influenced by R&B (remember the Aaliyah "Are You That Somebody?" reference in "Bedrock"?)
Usually by having so many rappers on a single song, it can be a mess, but this is pretty amazing.  Up there with multiple rapper songs like "Swagga Like Us" and "Forever." Chris really isn't featured on the song as much, but that might be a good thing because adding another person might have been an overkill. The song is available here

Soundtrack to Summer: 10 2010 Summer Songs

Show Me a Good Time-Drake Thank Me Later
Your Love-Nicki Minaj Pink Friday
Who Dat-J. Cole Still Untitled
Find Your Love-Drake Thank Me Later
Never Been-Wiz Khalifa Kush and Orange Juice
Deja Vu-Mike Posner 31 Minutes to Take Off
Dueces-Chris Brown and Tyga Fan of a Fan
Power-Kanye West Still Untitled
Up All Night-Drake Nicki Minaj Thank Me Later
Downtown-Wale More About Nothing

It was hard to pick a top 10 because summer basically started end of April and I tend to hop from song to song a lot, but these are the ones that came to mind quickly, in no particular order.  Thank Me Later was definitely the soundtrack to my summer, even though my relationship to that album is strange.  Its like I grow to love it more everyday, but it was still somewhat of a disappointment.  LOL I think this was the reaction Drake was expecting when he titled the album.

Other random favorites of Summer
Favorite Movies:
The Other Guys, Takers
Favorite TV Shows:
Real Housewives of NJ, Jersey Shore (I'm Jersey obsessed obviously) and of course The Boondocks

[Music Video] Kanye West-Power

(Insert excuse of why I haven't written in a while)
Now that we have gotten that out of the way, Kanye West came out for Power.  Remember when I wrote about "Power" and I was really excited about the video." Yes, I was underwhelmed. It was hyped as to be a "moving potrait" but that wasn't my issue with that.  It was it was only 90 seconds long.  I feel like not doing the whole song it was undeveloped and kinda just a cop out to call it "different".  But I guess it could be worse.  The images are nice, I will give it that.

Kanye West did his first UStream yesterday and talked about how his favorite video, hands down, is "Flashing Lights."  He also mentioned liking "Diamonds" and "GoldDigger."  He gave his usual long reason for saying why he liked it, but basically he liked how the sexy woman, that wouldn't be described as "sexy" in mainstream media, took the sexual and power position and wasn't submissive.  The video is ok to me, but I didn't like how he didn't do the entire song, which is my main problem with the "Power" video.  Thinking outside the box is one thing, but I think you should go all the way and complete the thought.  I also find it funny that he does short videos with his songs with Dwele and Dwele is never in the video.  Tough break.  I fell like Dwele would be a bigger artists if he had that exposure, because he does great work on his own and with Kanye.

Kanye also talked about how he was displeased when some parts of the "All Falls Down" video, which is actually my favorite Kanye video.   He didn't like the scene in the mirror and the metal detector scene, which his described as kinda silly because he wanted it all to be in first person.  But I feel since it was only his second video, they wanted to make sure his image was actually in the video to represent him since he was relatively new.  He did say this was the point where he took more control of his videos because he wanted them to be an extension of himself.  But this is still one of my favorite videos ever.

"Power" Kanye West

Yeah, I've been a little removed from blogs and what not.  I was in NY last week which was great.  Then because I had a lot on my mind I became obsessed with watching TV on DVD, (well online and on demand).  Anyway, some of this stuff is kinda behind, but this is mostly an editorial blog rather then a place to get links, especially after the dreaded email all music bloggers get about not posting links lol.

Anyway, Kanye came out with a song last week which is supposedly the first official single from his album "Good Ass Job."  "Good Ass Job" was suppose to came after "Graduation," obviously that's what everyone desires after graduationg, but "808s and Heartbreak" came into play.  Which now to me just seems like a little break (intermission) is his series of albums.

I actually love the song "Power" which is suprising since I haven't liked a Kanye song since Late Registration.  (I can go on a long tirade about "Graduation" but we'll save that for later.  But honestly, when people think o that album, they don't think of the music, the think about the window shade glasses).  But the songs sounds like a natural progression after Graduation and especially "Late Registration."  This is the Kanye I know and love and miss.  The song kinda sounds like "Crack Music" but better, and it features Dwele, a Detroit artist that was previously featured on "Flashing Lights." I actually accidentally went to a Dwele concert for free at Michigan that celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Center of African American studies.  It was crazy because he did a full set and everyone was real close to the stage.  I never really heard his music before, so it was a cool experience to get introduced to it.

Anyway, what's also interesting about "Power" is that the song is not produced by Kanye, but S1, a producer from Houston who had done previous work with Ghostface, Slim Thug and Chamillionaire.  He originally made this beat for Rhymefest (remember that song "Brand New"?) but Kanye heard it and did his take on it instead.  This is a pretty big break for a producer, espeically since Kanye usually produces his own stuff.  Here's an interview with the producer that I found on MTV.

I'm very excited that Kanye is back and equally excited for the music video for this.  I project its going to be CRAZY.

Update: on his blog Kanye labeled the album title for this song "????" so he might be changing the album title name or it might not be on "Good Ass Job." I highly recommend he keeps the title.  But where is the signature bear that been missing since "Graduation"? I miss him. Also, Complex.com did this feature where 10 bloggers gave their opinion on Power. Click here to read

Here's the video for "Brand New" and 2 of my favorite Kanye songs "All Falls Down" and "Spaceship"

A House Into a Home

So I've been reading in a lot of blogs that Kanye is selling his LA crib.  I really didn't see how that was news worthy but if you see the pictures, his house is the exact one from the "Heartless" video.  When I first saw the video, I thought I would love to actually have the Jetsons artwork in my house.  Love the decorations and very simplistic.  He also has a life size Buzz Lightyear. Definitely gives me interior design ideas.

Mass Love Letters

I had my iPod on shuffle the other day and I realized that "Every Girl" by Young Money is the vulgar version of the 2004 single "Selfish" by Slum Village.  Both songs are about wanting multiple women, but "Selfish" is more of an appreciation and admiration of all women while "Every Girl" is about...sexual relations obviously lol.  Both great songs though.

Winner-T.I., Justin Timberlake, Jamie Foxx

This song leaked a couple of weeks ago, but as I said before, it takes me a while to really judge a song.  At first I think this song was overproduced and lyrics weren't really saying anything new. However, after further reflection, it could be a nice song for the summer and could be a commercial success because the lyrics are what anyone can relate to, the desire or confidence to be a winner.  I just thought having this trio together could make an amazing song, not just something mediocre. But having more than 2 people on a song that are not a group can be difficult.  For instance, if they were talking about a girl, it could be annoying to have 3 dudes talk about some chick (example, Bedrock.  Good song, but waaay too many people on the track).  Its not an impossible feat to have a successful song with 3 different artists on it though.  A successful song that comes to mind is "Knocks You Down" with Ne-Yo, Keri Hilson, and Kanye West. This song is a nice effort though, but my favorite T.I. and Justin Timberlake collaboration has to be "My Love."
